Mood Boards
My mood boards here have a lot of images of the city of Tokyo and some of the architecture there. I also have an image of sushi, which is popular in Tokyo. There is an image of some Japanese traditional art. I also have the famous Mount Fuji shown here.
Sketches
I tried out a bunch of variations of the Tokyo title in different styles. I included Mount Fuji in some. I also had a sketch with Tokyo as a vertical sign since that is how the Japanese language is written. I have one sketch that is meant to look like Japanese characters but it is really English. I also made a few icon sketches that include a cat, a cherry blossom tree and some sushi.
First Digital Versions
The first three digital versions of my sketches are meant to look like Japanese characters but its read in English. The letters are supposed to emulate traditional Japanese brushstrokes. The second design has a red background texture of origami paper. I chose origami since it is a popular art form in Japan. The third design is just like the first design but with a different brush stroke setting. I made the letters of the last design myself and in each letter I put icons that represent Tokyo, Japan. I ended up moving forward with design since I thought it looked cleaner than the rest. Additionally, a problem with the last design is it creates some stereotypes about Japan.
Final Design
For my final design I added the tagline "unlike anything you've seen". My reasoning for the tagline was I thought that the culture of Tokyo was very different than that of America. Below it there is a call to action "discover Tokyo at GoTokyo.org". This gets people going to the travel website which in turn increases tourism.
I made a subway sign mockup which might work well since people are already traveling on the subway. For the city billboard mockup I made the letters vertical and added a city background.
I made a Tokyo T-Shirt design with a city background image and Tokyo written vertically. I also have a hat mockup with the red origami paper background behind the Tokyo letters. The bill of the hat and the button are both a matching red color.
Reflection
Looking back I wish I tried out more ideas with this project. I could have made more variations of the Tokyo title and changed up the layout. I learned it is important to fully explore all angles of a project.
