Mood Boards
I looked at some other successful posters for inspiration. I also looked at some typography that stood out to me. I picked out designs that resonated with me and could work well with the project.
Sketches
With these sketches I played with the ACL letters a lot; I tried stretching and distorting them, making them 3D, making them rotate around a mic, putting the letters on 3 speakers and more. I tried laying out the rest of the text in a few different ways to try to see what worked best. My sketches were aimed at being eye-catching and emphasizing the ACL title.
First Digital Versions
My digital versions of the sketches are in order from oldest to most recent. The first poster design is the earliest version and you can see the progression moving towards the last design. My first design is based on a sketch with the giant ACL letters filling the full poster and information sitting within the letters. I added a background with textures distorted in Photoshop. I ended up moving forward with the microphone concept instead. I felt the first design was messy and the text looked awkward inside the letters. In the second design, the artist lineup is inside of the microphone cord. The problem with this was there was not enough space for the names of the artist lineup. In the third design I came up with the solution to put the names in the middle with the cord wrapped around them. I also changed the ACL text to a custom design for a more artistic and unique feel. I added a grey background that I made to add some more excitement and movement to the poster. In my last poster design I added color to that background. I increased the size of the ACL text and decreased the size of the microphone. I also formatted the artist lineup text to fit more perfectly and centered inside the cord.
For my final design I changed the look of the letter "A" in "ACL" to make it less wonky and more legible. I changed the font of the text for the location and start date of the festival. The first font had too much going on and the new font appears more professional and legible. I increased the size of the artist lineup text and made it all caps. It is now more featured which is important because the artist lineup is what a lot of people care about most. I removed the "Artist Lineup" title text since it was unnecessary and added clutter. Lastly I decreased the opacity of the blue texture background so there is more focus on the other elements of the poster.
The street sign mockup is the same poster as my final design but in the context of a city block. For the billboard mockup I added 3 microphones with cords that wrap around each other. I have the artist lineup inside the microphone cord again but this time the cord is positioned differently to match the poster more. I have the event start date below the ACL title.
Additional Mockups
I made badge mockups for both the ACL staff and VIP passes for concert goers. They are color coded so that security can easily tell the difference at a glance. I have also made a design specifically for a T-shirt. These could be given out at the festival to promote the event. Lastly, I made a lanyard mockup with the ACL logo and "3 Day - 2022" written on it.
Reflection
In this project I learned that text legibility helps the viewers ability to read the text but it also makes the design look cleaner and more professional. I also learned to pay attention to visual hierarchy and making the most important elements more prominently featured.
