Mood Boards
My mood boards consist of climactic moments in the movies and important objects from the movies and books. I also have a few different movie covers and book covers from the Goblet of Fire specifically. By analyzing these mood boards I got ideas of what to do and what not to do.
Sketches
I started by making the mind map. It is a diagram of related words to get the ideas flowing. Making a mind map gets everything on paper and allows you to explore ideas that you might not have considered. Next I made a few sketches to see what worked best. I incorporated important imagery from crucial moments of the book into my sketches.
First Digital Versions
I moved forward with three of my sketches into digital versions with illustrator. The first book concept has the golden egg on the front. The golden egg was given to the champion of the first Triwizard Tournament game. When the egg is put under water it reveals the hint to the next tournament game. One of the games in the tournament is entirely based underwater, this is why the background of the book is meant to look like water. The second book concept has an image of Voldemort in his weakened state before he is resurrected later in the book. The third concept has an image of the Goblet of Fire which was used to draw names to decide who will participate in the Triwizard Tournament. I chose to move forward with the first design since I thought it was the most visually interesting and eye catching. I think looking at the egg also brings up questions in your mind about what exactly it could be and what its context is in the book.
Final Design
For my final book cover design I changed the title font to something more fitting to the style of the book. I added additional gradients to the shell of the golden egg. I changed up the background to look more like flowing water. I also added an illustration of the Triwizard Cup on the back cover. The wizard that first touches the Triwizard Cup is the one that wins the tournament. The Triwizard Cup was also unexpectedly transformed into a portal device by a dark wizard. This caused Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory to be teleported to Voldemort when they both grabbed the cup at the same time. Cedric Diggory ends up dying to Voldemort because of this. My quote on the back cover "Harry, Take my body back... Take my body back to my father." is relevant to the illustration of the Triwizard Cup because of this.
I made a paperback book mockup. The flaps are not shown here but they would be inside the book.
Reflection
I learned that everything you design should have a purpose. Creating designs that just look pretty but do not have any reasoning or backstory behind them are generally unsuccessful. This is why I chose to design with elements that fit best with the story and make sense together.
